Some years ago, when I was probably 5 years old, my 9 year old cousin and I went on a small trip with our grandfather. A trip that ended up scaring us a lot. It was a winter afternoon and our grandfather told us that he was heading to the farm of one of his friends, one hour away from our village. Our grandfather needed some new materials to take care of his own farm and animals so his friend had offered to help. So even though it was cold outside and it had already started to get dark, my cousin and I decided to join our grandfather on the trip.

We took our horse and the cart and immediately made our way to the farm. My cousin and I brought our favourite blanket to protect us from the cold night and by the time we got there it was already dark and we couldn’t see much of our surroundings. There were no lights.                     Our grandfather told us to wait on the cart while he went to talk to his friend.

As my cousin and I were there in an uncomfortable silence, the only sound was the cold winter wind. We snuggled close as we impatiently waited for our grandfather to appear. I could swear hours had passed when he finally came back. My cousin who was scared and had a tight grip on my hand thought that maybe we had been abandoned. He guessed that since our grandfather was always complaining about how messy we could be with our games and toys, maybe he had become annoyed and had left us there as a punishment.

Fortunately, after what seemed like a very long wait, our grandfather came back holding the things he needed. When we complained that he had taken too long, he told us he had only been gone for a few minutes. I’m not sure if he was telling the truth, but what I know is that after that trip, my cousin and I never went with him to that farm at night again.
